Saving Plants That Heal People: An exploration of Rainforest Remedies with Abigail McClam

Wednesday February 27th from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Location:  lotus healing center, Charleston SC

Fee: $30 for members / $40 for non-members

Join Abigail McClam, the founder and director of Lotus Healing Center, and an experienced Arvigo Therapy Practitioner and Rainforest Remedy Herbalist, for a sensory exploration of rainforest based plant medicine. From the forests of southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, we dive into the history, culture, and practices of Rainforest Remedies. Through the story of Dr. Rosita Arvigo and her studies with the traditional Maya healer Don Ejilo Panti, we learn about the ethnobotanical study of rainforest medicines, the ongoing work of the Belize Ethnobotany Project, as well as the origins, harvest, functions and formulations of unique, powerful, healing plants. Learn to heal and grow from nature’s medicines in this engaging herbalist class.

What to expect?

During this class, Abigail will share about her four year intensive study of herbal medicine with the Arvigo Institute, Rainforest Remedies, and the importance of these ancient wisdom traditions that make incredible plant medicine. Abigail will also introduce the traditional herb collection practices and sustainable harvesting methods referred to by Dr. Rosita Arvigo as “salvage botany;” which involves harvesting and preserving valuable medicinal plants that would otherwise be destroyed by the march of development and deforestation.  Rainforest Remedies’ methods of herb collection serve to honor the land, the plant being harvested, and the traditions of Mayan healers.

In class Abigail will provide a tincture tasting of herbs, sampling of infusions, and examples of the formulations used in Rainforest Remedies, as well as an explanation of their healing properties and treatment protocols. Throughout class, we will serve “Jungle Juice,” a heart warming infusion and blood tonic rich in vitamin C. Rainforest Remedies herbal infusions, tinctures, vaginal steam herbs, self-care oils and supportive education materials will be available for purchase.

The take away:

Participants will gain a base knowledge of Rainforest Remedies herbal medicine, an overview of traditional herbal formulations, access to herbal medicine products, and hopefully a deep respect for the wisdom of these indigenous and Mayan practices of botanical medicine.
